Benefits of Verifications
Participants in UK ETS
- Trading - To be allowed to sell extra CO2 there
has to be robust verification of companies' emissions data by an
independent third party, eg c:sense.
- Risk Management - Even if you do not wish to trade, external verification, eg by c:sense, will give assurance that your data is correct and gives protection should you be audited.
- Image - Your shareholders, employees, customers and the public will see that your commitment to energy reductions is real. It can form part of your environmental or energy plan reports, and help when seeking accreditation.
- Improvements - Verification will help identify measures
for energy saving, environmental gains and/or process improvements
offering tangible benefits.
Participants on the EU ETS
- Mandatory - If your business falls within the scheme, then you must have your emissions data verified, eg by c:sense.
- Opt-out? - Even if you are allowed to opt-out of the first phase of the scheme, because you are participating in the UK scheme, verification will still be necessary.

“ it
was essential that our appointed verifiers had first class technical
abilities in order to appreciate some of the process related nuances.
We felt that in GASTEC at CRE Ltd, those qualities were well established"
